“My car is so loud.”

“I guess.” I glanced over at Avery in the passenger seat, his head pressed against the window. We’d gone half an hour into our drive home without Avery speaking, and I’d kind of assumed he’d fallen asleep. “You feeling okay?”

“I feel great.” He shifted in his seat to half-face toward me, and even though his words were slurred around the edges, they weren’t as bad as they had been before. Good. I didn’t need the extra difficulty in terms of sneaking back onto campus. “I feel better than I ever have, you know? Because I’m not living out the perfect Avery life. I had fun tonight. I went out with a girl and had fun.”

“Um … cool?” My voice caught around the edges, though Avery was definitely still too drunk to notice. Still, I flushed. The way he’d said that—went out with a girl—set off something in my chest, something that I did my best to tamp way back down, because it was just the alcohol talking, and I wasn’t about to say anything back to Avery that we’d both regret. “Hopefully you still feel that way when we have to park in the visitor lot behind the north gate, because we have way broken curfew.”

Obviously, there was more stuff that I thought about saying. Like that I’d had a great time, too, not being perfect. Like that being anywhere with him was quickly turning into my favorite place. But you couldn’t just say stuff like that to your friends. Not without them thinking you cared about them in weird different ways than you did. When you definitely didn’t.

I wouldn’t go down that road again, even if I did like Avery that way. Wickham’s face plastered itself across my mind. I just wouldn’t. It wasn’t safe, not for someone like me.

“It was worth it.” He’d closed his eyes again, I saw when I glanced over for just a second, cognizant of the dark and winding roads. “It’s always worth it to hang out with you, George.”

“Oh … thanks.” It was cold in here, that was all. That was why I had goose bumps. “You too, Aves.”

“Good.” His voice got quieter as he settled into sleep, and I smiled as we came around another bend. “I’m glad.”

“Yeah,” I echoed, as I heard his breathing slow. “I’m glad, too.”
